The Independent Police Investigative Directorate says 12 police members, including 10 from Durban's organised crime unit at Cato Manor, were arrested on Wednesday.
IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, says 10 of the men were taken into custody in KwaZulu-Natal and the other two in Rustenburg and Pretoria.
Two of those arrested were members of the national intervention unit.
Dlamini says the police members face charges that include murder and racketeering.
The arrests bring to 28 the number of police members from the Cato Manor unit who have been arrested on a string of charges that include more than a dozen murders.
