Cop wounded as gang tries to enter SAPS office building

Steve Bhengu

Police have launched a manhunt for at least twelve suspects who attempted to enter one of the South African Police Service’s office buildings in Pretoria on Sunday night.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the twelve suspects travelled in a white bakkie.

"The motive for the attempt to enter the building is under investigation. Police officers who were on patrol foiled the attempt to enter the building.

"During the confrontation one member, a constable, was shot and wounded during the attack. He has been taken to hospital for medical care."

"Nothing was taken and stolen from the building,” added Mathe.

She said the South African Police Service has set aside R25 million during the current financial year for security upgrades at its buildings.

According to a preliminary investigation, the armed men posed as police officers before overpowering the security guards. During patrolling, an on-duty police officer responded to the incident and a shoot-out ensued.

The armed men fled the scene with a service pistol, car keys, a petrol card, and R145 in cash.

Mathe says the SAPS is not at liberty to discuss what is stored or kept at the building for security reasons.

She cautioned members of the public not to circulate false and misleading reports about the incident.

No police uniforms were stolen during the incident.
