The man who killed two people at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday has died.
The off-duty policeman shot his wife and her brother on the 8th floor of the court building, before turning the gun on himself.
His wife was at court for their divorce proceedings.
The 32-year-old officer stationed at KwaMashu survived the incident but died in hospital on Monday night.
None of the other people in the vicinity of the shooting sustained physical injuries, but several of the court staff and eyewitnesses reported being traumatised.
The courtroom and floor were evacuated and did not open for the rest of the day as police and forensics scoured the crime scene.
Justice officials now want to know one thing. How was an off-duty policeman allowed inside of a courtroom with a gun?
The department spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga assured the public that this was not the norm but rather an exception.
The court will re-open on Tuesday and officials and staff who witnessed the incident will receive trauma counselling.
