Cop who gunned down husband denied bail

File

The Pretoria North Magistrates’ Court has denied bail to Sergeant Kate Hlongwane, who is accused of the premeditated murder of her husband.

The 43-year-old who is attached to the Dube visible policing unit is accused of using her service pistol to shoot her 40-year-old husband, Russel, following an argument at their Soshanguve home, on 28 January.

She was arrested on the same day after he died in hospital from his wounds.

The National Prosecuting Authority said Hlongwane denied in court that she intentionally killed her husband, saying the gun went off as she wrestled with the husband.

Spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said that the state however played a voice recording to the court in which Hhlongwane told her friend that she was “tired of her cheating husband” and was now going to use her power.

The matter was postponed to 29 April.
