Cop who accidentally shot prosecutor escapes jail time

A Kwazulu Natal policeman Detective Warrant Officer, Muzi Euchalystius Mkhize has escaped jail time after being convicted of culpable homicide in the death of State Prosecutor, Adelaide Watt.

She was fatally wounded in November 2019, when a shotgun that was in court as an exhibit was accidentally discharged by Mkhize.

In his plea statement this week, he said that during court proceedings he had dozed off and was startled when the court suddenly adjourned.

This had caused him to lose control of the shotgun, and in an attempt to regain control of the weapon, a shot was discharged.

NPA spokesperson, Natasha Kara-Ramkisooon, says in terms of the plea agreement, which was also accepted by Watt's daughter, Mkhize was given a six-year sentence which was wholly suspended for five years.

In his plea, Mkhize conceded that his conduct was negligent and he advised that he never intended to shoot or injure Watt as they had a fruitful relationship.

The court ordered him to pay a fine of R20 000 to an organization for abused women.
