A policeman has been summoned to appear in court next on a charge of defeating the ends of justice for allegedly tipping off illegal miners about police operations.
The Hawks said the 47-year-old Detective Sergeant is scheduled to appear in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on 4 April.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said he allegedly informed “identified individuals” in October 2021 about a planned disruptive operation by the Hawks targeting illegal mining syndicates.
A case was registered in August 2023 which led to a charge of defeating the administration of justice being investigated.
“According to the probe, one of the suspects reportedly spotted an unmarked Hawks vehicle in the area and contacted the Sergeant to do a system check on the vehicle.
“The information was passed on to the syndicate resulting in the operation being derailed,” Mavimbela said.
He said the docket was submitted to the Directorate for Public Prosecution for a decision and this led to the summons being issued to the police officer.
