PRETORIA, August 31 (ANA) – A police captain, based at Milnerton in Cape Town, is under police guard in hospital after he fatally shot his wife, and his step-daughter, before turning the gun on himself, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said Thursday.
“A 48-year-old Milnerton [South African Police Service] SAPS police officer was today [Thursday] arrested for shooting and killing his wife, 45, and step-daughter, 20. The suspect then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself on the head. However, he did not die and he is currently stable in hospital under police guard,” Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in statement.
“It is alleged that the shooting occurred at around 2.45am on 31 August 2017. Apparently, the suspect’s two sons, who are teenagers aged 13 and 17 respectively, were in the house when the shooting occurred and they reported to the police station, after which the police rushed to the scene.”
The Ipid was called to the scene and took over the investigation. Twenty-eight cartridges were recovered from the scene.
Dlamini said a docket of murder has been opened.
“The suspect will be charged within 48 hours and once he has recovered enough to appear in court, he will face two counts of murder,” said Dlamini.
