An Mpumalanga police officer is behind bars for brutally assaulting and stabbing his wife following an altercation at a tavern this week.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said the incident occurred at a tavern in Barberton in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
IPID spokesperson, Robbie Raburabu, said 38-year-old Constable Lucky Maduna appeared in court on Wednesday.
He said according to information, Constable Maduna first slapped his 28-year-old wife, Nonkululeko, before assaulting her on the ground with a beer bottle.
“It is further alleged that he then went to the car and returned with a whiskey bottle and continued assaulting her with the said bottle until it broke and he stabbed her on the neck rendering her motionless,” Raburabu said.
He said she died on the scene, while a friend who tried to intervene was also stabbed and later airlifted to hospital.
Raburabu said Maduna would remain in custody until 11 October when he is expected to apply for bail.
