A police officer is among seven people who are due to appear in court for allegedly defrauding a government entity of R9.2 million.
The Hawks said the police Sergeant from Pretoria was among those arrested early on Tuesday morning in a “take-down” operation in Soweto, Diepsloot, Johannesburg, Hammanskraal, Soshanguve and Magnolia Park in Pretoria.
Colonel Katlego Mogale, said these arrests relate to a probe into fraud and money laundering committed at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).
She said it was alleged that fraudulent claims were submitted to PRASA, alleging that the claimants were injured in train accidents.
Mogale said their investigation identified two PRASA employees who were allegedly responsible for processing the fraudulent claims.
“As a result, PRASA suffered an actual loss of R9.2 million,” she said.
The seven will appear at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday.
