Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, says he will appoint a retired judge to probe allegations of impropriety involving SA Revenue Services Commissioner, Oupa Magashula.
He said that after consulting Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, he had decided to institute a thorough investigation of allegations against Magashula.
These relate to a recorded conversation in which Magashula allegedly offered employment to an associate of a convicted drug dealer.
Gordhan says the investigation will probe whether Magashula had breached any of Sars processes or good governance.
The Revenue Service said the tape recording revealed nothing scandalous against Commissioner Magashula.
