Condolences have been streaming in for Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks, the past president of the Muslim Judicial Council.
Hendricks, described in one online dedication as "a visionary" and "one of South Africa’s most powerful and fearless voices of human rights activism", died on Friday night in Cape Town at the age of 54 after struggling with ill health for some time.
The current President of the Muslim Judicial Council, Shaykh Irafaan Abrahams told Voice of the Cape that Moulana Hendricks was known as a visionary with outstanding leadership abilities, oratory skills and a passion and willingness to serve the community.
The ANC Western Cape sent its condolences to the Muslim Judicial Council and the Muslim Community of South Africa, saying the party and the MJC have had a "long and rich history of working together on issues which not only affected our country but also global issues and challenges".
ANC Western Cape secretary Faiez Jacobs said: "in particular the ANC worked closely and always consulted Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks on issues around the Middle East and the struggle of the Palestinian people in particular".
He said as the standard bearer of the Muslim community in South Africa, the MJC has kept the ANC abreast of all the interests and concerns of the Muslim community and ANC has become a great part of the community and its programmes that enriches the mosaic of our country.
ANC national spokesperson, Pule Mabe, said the governing party extended its condolences to Moulana Hendricks' family.
"We have lost a leader whose contribution will forever be recognised as part of our history. May we forever draw inspiration from his steadfast commitment to the principles of equality and justice to which he dedicated his life," Mabe said.
