Concern over spate of crime against women and children

The Commission for Gender Equality says it has noted with great concern, the increasing spate of violence and rape against women and children during this festive season.

The Commission cites some examples in a statement, including the busting of a brothel in Krugersdorp where girls and women from the Eastern Cape and six other provinces were rescued.

Their ages are between 14 and 37.

The commission says the violent rape and killing of a granny in front of her six-year-old grandchild in Attridgeville, Pretoria, should be condemned in the strong terms, noting that the perpetrator is known to the deceased.

He was given shelter in her yard as a tenant.

The commission has urged anyone with information on acts of violence, rape and abuse to report it, adding that it will be monitoring these cases as the court processes grind on.

The toll-free number to report such cases is 0800 007 709
