The Competition Tribunal has imposed fines of more than R27m on two wire mesh companies for price fixing and allocating customers.
The tribunal fined Reinforcing Mesh Solutions R21.6m for its participation in a cartel from 2004 to 2008 while Vulcania Reinforcing was ordered to pay an administrative penalty of R5.6m.
The competition tribunal said an investigation was initiated by the Competition Commission which received information from Murray and Roberts about the cartel.
Murray and Roberts, through its subsidiary, BRC Mesh Reinforcing, had participated in the cartel but was granted conditional immunity from prosecution for its cooperation with the Competition Commission's investigation.
