Closing arguments in bail hearing of "grenade thrower"

A former South African Air Force colonel, accused of blowing up his wife with a hand grenade in their Amanzimtoti home during an argument, will find out if he is to be granted bail by the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Magistrate Vanitha Armu is expected to hand down her ruling on whether Joel Mahoase, who faces a murder charge and a charge of unlawful possession of explosives, should be granted bail.

However, that will only come after she has heard closing arguments from Mahoase’s lawyer and from State prosecutor Sharon Moodley.

The state has not opposed bail.

During testimony given on Friday, to support the bail application, the court had heard that Mahoase’s wife had been charged with attempted murder after she had attempted to set him alight using brake fluid.

The court also heard that Mahoase had sought and been granted a protection order against her after she had stabbed him, leaving him with a lame arm.
