Murder charges were withdrawn against Zanokuhle Mbatha, the man implicated in the murder of Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, during a brief appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate's court on Tuesday.
Magistrate Daniel Thulare said from the submissions made by prosecutor Getrude Market, the court had accepted that there was no sufficient evidence to put him on trial.
He noted the withdrawal of the charges by the State, and consequently ordered the release of Mbatha.
Meyiwa, who was also the captain of Orlando Pirates, was killed in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo last month.
Two men allegedly entered the house and demanded cellphones before shooting Meyiwa.
