Johannesburg businessman Adam Catzavelos has been handed a R50 000 fine and a suspended sentence in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Friday.
Catzavelos’ sentence of two years in jail wholly suspended for five years unless he commits another crime.
He was earlier convicted for crimen injuria after filming himself using the k-word while on holiday on a beach in Greece.
Sentencing was handed down in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday by magistrate Hleziphe Mkhasibe.
"I am of the view that a fine coupled with suspension is appropriate under the circumstances.
"In the result, the accused is sentenced to R50 000 or two years imprisonment which is wholly suspended for a period of five years, on condition that the accused is not convicted of crimen-injuria, committed during the period of suspension," she said.
The crimen injuria complaint against Catzavelos was laid by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Gauteng chairperson Mandisa Mashego after the video went viral on social media.
Subsequently, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) also dragged Catzavelos to the Equality Court, where a settlement to pay R150 000 over 30 months was reached.
