Eastern Cape police are investigating a dramatic cash-in-transit heist which brought traffic to a standstill on the N2 near Komga outside East London on Thursday.

A video of the incident showing an explosion is doing the rounds on social media as well as footage of armed men in two vehicles speeding down a road.

Provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said the drama unfolded at around 16:15 when men travelling in three bakkies and armed with high-calibre firearms targeted a cash-in-transit vehicle.

He said the managed to flee the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Meanwhile, Nkohli said in another incident a short while later, at around 16.45, a police patrol travelling on a gravel road known as Peninsula Road in Kubusiedrift “was sandwiched by two bakkies with heavily armed men.”

He said the officers were robbed of their firearms and cell phones.

Nkohli said no one was injured in either of the two incidents while police are investigating the circumstances surrounding both cases.
