At least 12 people were killed in two horrific accidents in the Free State and Limpopo on Friday.

Free State authorities reported that seven people, including a toddler, died when a mini-bus collided with the trailer of a truck and caught alight.

Free State EMS spokesperson, Sipho Towa, said the accident happened on the R707 between Senekal and Marquard on Friday morning.

He said six patients with light, moderate and critical injuries were transported to the District Hospital in Senekal for urgent medical attention.

Meanwhile, ER24 reported the deaths of at least five people in a multi-vehicle accident on the N1 near Mookgophong, approximately 120km outside Polokwane on Friday afternoon.

Spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said ER24 paramedics joined Provincial Fire and EMS at the scene where "five light motor vehicles were seen scattered across the highway."

"Medics assessed the patients and found that four had already succumbed to their numerous injuries and were declared dead by the Provincial medics. Four other patients were found to be in critical condition. Unfortunately, during treatment, one critical patient succumbed to their injuries and was declared dead," he said.

"The details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations," Meiring said.
