Two people have died while two others sustained injuries when their vehicle lost control and overturned on the R61 road at Beyele location between Engcobo and Cofimvaba.
The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday morning at around 3am.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said a VW Polo with four occupants – two males and two females – was travelling from Cofimvaba in the direction towards Engcobo.
He said the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into dongas.
The two men, including the driver, were declared dead on the scene while the two females sustained slight injuries and managed to seek help.
“They were taken to All Saints Hospital in Engcobo for further medical treatment,” Binqose said in a media statement.
“It is alleged that driving under the influence of alcohol was the main contributing factor.”
An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation.
