Two Cape Town policemen appeared in court on Monday in connection with a shooting in Hanover Park earlier this month which left a security officer dead and sparked community outrage.
They were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate in connection with the shooting of 38-year-old, Marlon Fuller, on 5 December.
Fuller, a security officer, was shot and succumbed to his wounds in hospital after reportedly leaving his house to call his daughters home from a nearby playground late that night.
Western Cape Safety MEC, Albert Fritz, who has taken a keen interest in the case following an outcry from the community, said the police officers arrived shortly afterwards and it was unclear why they began shooting.
Fritz said he would request that the court watching brief unit in his Department to monitor the case for any "police inefficiencies" that he said may result in the case being struck off the roll.
"Our police officers are responsible for making us feel safe and any actions contrary to that must be investigated and met with the appropriate disciplinary action," he said in calling for calm.
Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said one of the two Constables arrested, Eugene Jones, was granted bail of R800.
IPID spokesperson, Sontaga Seisa, said the other policeman, Constable Johan van der Merwe, remains in custody until they both appear in court again on 21 December.
