Western Cape police said a 14-year-old boy on his way to school was killed, while two other teens were wounded when gunmen open fire randomly in Ravensmead on Tuesday morning.
Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the gunmen got out of a car and opened fire.
“As a consequence, the 14-year-old was killed and others aged 15 and 17 were injured. They were transported to a medical facility for treatment,” Potelwa said.
She said murder and attempted murder dockets were opened while a manhunt has been launched for the perpetrators.
The Western Cape Education Department said the perpetrators fled onto the grounds of St Andrews Secondary school in Ravensmead, causing panic among the learners entering the school gates.
Department spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said “schools in the area immediately went into lockdown mode in terms of safety procedures”, adding the shooting has now impacted on examinations at the school.
“The WCED NSC examination team was also alerted immediately and measures were put in place to ensure that the Grade 12 learners could write their NSC exam and that the integrity of the examination is not compromised.
“Counselling support is being provided to the learners. Refreshments have been provided to the learners as well,” she said.
The WC Education Department said security has also been arranged to ensure that the learners feel safe during the examination.
Meanwhile, Brigadier Potelwa said a 55-year-old man was also shot and wounded a few metres from the scene where the children were shot.
She said he was taken to hospital for treatment while the SAPS beefed up deployments in an effort to stabilise the area.
Potelwa said the motive for the shooting forms part of ongoing investigations which will also look into any possible link between the two incidents.
