The Portfolio Committee on Police wants police commissioner general Rhia Phiyega to urgently respond to and resolve the issue of a shortage of DNA kits for rape cases at police stations.
This follows media reports that police stations are running out of DNA kits, which are used to collect forensic evidence from rape victims.
The portfolio committee's acting chairperson, Annelize van Wyk, says some police stations are resorting to using expired kits, which is totally unacceptable.
She says the high incidences of rape around the country make the situation untenable.
