Cabinet decides to forge ahead with nuclear procurement programme

Cabinet has decided to forge ahead with its controversial 9,600 MegaWatt nuclear procurement programme.

A Government Gazette notice released by the Department of Energy has confirmed Cabinet’s decision to move ahead.

News24 reports that this means the department can now call for quotes for the tendering process to begin.

Russia, China, France, South Korea, Canada and Japan are all vying to win the main nuclear contract, while there are also opportunities for local companies to win contracts for various infrastructure and construction tenders.

Earlier reports suggested that Thyspunt near Cape St. Francis has been identified as the preferred site for South Africa's second nuclear power station.

The other one is at Koeberg in Cape Town.
