Business Leadership SA urges new SAA board to restore financial stability

JOHANNESBURG, October 20 (ANA) – Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) on Friday urged the new board of embattled South African Airways (SAA) to work tirelessly in restoring the financial stability of the airline and implement transformation plans.

BLSA chief executive Bonang Mohale said that the new SAA board must “root out” reported corruption at the airline.

“BLSA welcomes the new board appointments at South African Airways and the commitment from the government to strengthen the airline and create the necessary conditions for transformation of all our state-owned companies,” Mohale said.

“We urge the new board to use this opportunity to show South Africans it is fully committed to transformation by rooting out corruption and restoring trust and financial stability to our national airline.”

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba on Thursday announced changes to the SAA board, which included six new members. The sweeping changes also saw the back of controversial board chairwoman, Dudu Myeni. She has been replaced by businessman JB Magwaza.

Gigaba said the changes would be effective from November 3 when he would hold a special meeting with the board.

Other than Magwaza, the new board members are Nolitha Fakude as deputy chairwoman; businessman Geoff Rothschild; aviation expert Ahmed Bassa; accountant Tinyiko Mhlari; and businessman Martin Kingston. They replace Tryphosa Mmakeaya; Mzimkhulu Malunga; Siphile Buthelezi; Nazmeera Moola; and Gugu Sipamla.
