An armed burglar, who had stolen a hi-fi system and cell phones, was confronted by one of the people in the house whom he stabbed and wrestled with before he was shot dead.
Police on Wednesday said the 25-year-old burglar was shot in the stomach. The burglar met his fate in the early hours of Tuesday during a house robbery in Newlands West, Durban.
Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said a policeman was asleep in his bedroom at Chippendale, Newlands West when he heard his 22-year-old son screaming for help.
“When he proceeded to him he discovered that his son was in altercation with the suspect and was bleeding,” said Mbhele.
The policeman joined his son and wrestled the knife from the burglar, who then drew a “firearm”. The policeman shot the burglar in the stomach.
Mbhele said it was later discovered that the firearm was in fact a toy gun.
The policeman’s son who had been stabbed was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to the injuries.
