The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a fatality as a result of police action following an incident which occurred in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
It is alleged that the police officers of Harare CPU were patrolling at Mbarhayi Street in the early hours of Monday when they spotted a white bakkie with four suspects busy stealing bricks at a building site.
IPID National Spokesperson Ndileka Cola says when the officers approached, the suspects ran away but the police managed to apprehend two of them.
One of the men then came back to rescue his friends and fired shots at the police officers.
Cola says the police then returned fire and wounded the suspect, who turned out to be a police officer from the Khayelitsha Tactical Response Team.
He was taken to Khayelitsha hospital where he died from his injuries.
