Breakthrough in murder investigation of SASKO employees

Police in the Western Cape made a breakthrough in the double murder investigation related to a robbery of a bread truck in Delft last month.

Three workers from SASKO were in their delivery truck parked on Symphony Way on 15 May when the brazen robbery and shooting was captured on their dash cam footage.

The video went viral on social media and allowed SAPS to identify two suspects involved.

In the video, the driver and two other workers are seen chatting and laughing in the vehicle when two suspects appear at each window holding firearms.

All three were shot and only one survived.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie says during the initial stage of the investigation, a 38-year-old suspect was identified but continued to evade arrest after many tracing operations were initiated.

He says on Youth Day, the investigating team followed up on information that the suspect was at the Delft Day Hospital receiving medical treatment after he was involved in a scuffle with community members who accused him of robbery.

Pojie says when the team arrived at the hospital they recognised the suspect and placed him under arrest.

He says the suspect provided a false name and details to hospital administrators.

The alleged killer will make his first court appearance on Wednesday on two charges of murder and one of attempted murder.

Police are still searching for his accomplice.
