A courageous Durban paramedic rescued a lady in her 70's from "certain death" as a fire ripped through a block of flats in Berea on Saturday afternoon.
Rescue Care paramedic, Ian Wessels was returning to the ambulance base, when he saw smoke and was flagged down by bystanders.
Spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson says he immediately called for the Durban Fire Department and went to investigate.
He says a security guard informed him that there was a sick lady on the 3rd floor, and without any hesitation, Wessels, who has previous fire fighting experience, entered the building.
Jamieson says he managed to rescue the elderly woman and carried her down the stairs to a waiting ambulance.
She was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
The Durban Fire Department worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.
