A 46-year-old man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Friday after he picked up 18 boxes of dry abalone that was on a passenger bus travelling from Cape Town to Pretoria.
Police received information about a suspicious consignment being transported by an Intercity Express bus which was travelling from Cape Town to Pretoria via Kimberly and Johannesburg.
Spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu says a sting operation was planned and the bus was followed all the way to a fuel station in Gold Reef City in Johannesburg where the suspicious cargo was offloaded.
He says a man in a bakkie picked up the 18 boxes which were filled with dry abalone worth R3 million.
Officers followed the vehicle to residential premises where the arrest was made.
