Bogus cops in Mpumalanga rob French tourists

Tripadviser: Blyde River Canyon

The Mpumalanga provincial government has condemned the hijacking of an elderly French couple in Graskop on Monday by three bogus police officers.

According to police, the international tourists were exploring tourism attractions around Graskop when they were stopped by three men in full police uniform but driving a private vehicle.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act which paints us in a negative way and has the potential to chase away tourists," said Finance, Economic Development and Tourism MEC Vusi Mkhatshwa.

The French woman is reported to have sustained a minor finger injury when she was forcibly dragged out of the vehicle by the three perpetrators who fled with their rented vehicle (Suzuki Swift registration JV 45 WT GP) and other valuables.

“We are at a critical time in our economic space, where we need tourists more than ever before," said MEC Mkhatshwa.

“Our police are working hard to apprehend these impersonators; and we can confirm that the law will take its course once they are behind bars."
