The Department of Basic Education has distanced itself from a message circulating on social media platforms, which says the re-opening of schools has been delayed due to the Mandela Day activities.
The Department confirmed in a statement on Sunday that the message was false and must be ignored and deleted, as it had caused much confusion in the Basic Education sector.
It said it had official channels of communication with all schools, and did not communicate such important information via social media.
The Department said schools went in a recess on 22 June and would resume on 17 July, as per the school calendar approved 2 years ago.
