The Fochville Magistrates’ Court has granted bail to 55-year-old Gert van Emmens who faces 12 counts of culpable homicide.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said he was granted bail of R20 000 for the Schedule 1 offence, with conditions on Thursday.
Gauteng spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said the conditions include that he should hand over his passport to the investigating officer and that he should not interfere directly or indirectly with witnesses.
“He is facing charges of 12 counts of culpable homicide and a count of reckless and or negligent driving alternatively inconsiderate driving,” she said.
The horror accident occurred on 10 July when Van Emmens, who was driving a Ford Ranger vehicle on JB Marx Road in Fochville, collided with a minibus taxi transporting school kids.
“The accident resulted in the death of 11 children and a driver of the minibus,” Mahanjana said.
She said the case against Van Emmens was postponed to 15 October for further investigations.
