A 23-year-old woman is in police custody after she allegedly assaulted and strangled her employer's baby.
Police Spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala says a mother of a three-month-old baby girl left the infant with her nanny so that she could go to work.
She says on Wednesday evening the baby was crying uncontrollably and had a high temperature.
Gwala says the mother made enquiries and discovered that the babysitter had allegedly assaulted and strangled her child.
She immediately reported the incident to Umlazi police who opened up a case of attempted murder.
The baby was taken to hospital for medical attention and the suspect arrested.
Police urged parents to only hire skilled people to look after their children and to ensure that they do a background check.
The nanny is expected to appear in the Umlazi Magistrates court soon.
