An auctioneer from North West has been sentenced to an effective five years direct imprisonment after pocketing the proceeds of an auction of government assets worth R1.5 million.
The 38-year-old Masilo Molefe was sentenced at the Mmabatho Magistrates Court on two counts of theft on Wednesday.
Molefe was appointed as an auctioneer on behalf of the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality and Sedibeng water and was set to auction off some assets on their behalf.
Following the auction, he instead kept the proceeds to himself.
The matter was reported to the Hawks which subsequently led to Molefe's arrest.
