The Western Cape government said at least five people were killed when a passenger bus overturned on the N2 near Swellendam on Friday.

According to a statement, 48 passengers were injured in the crash after the driver reportedly lost control of the bus.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said, “I would like to send my most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. For now, we are focused on a coordinated response to give all victims the best possible care and ensure safety at the scene.”

Minister of Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie also expressed his condolences and said, “This incident is a chilling reminder to everyone that we need to be extra vigilant on our roads this long weekend.”

The Provincial Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said Eskom has exempted Swellendam Hospital from the load-shedding schedule.

“This will greatly assist the facility in ensuring round-the-clock, lifesaving services,” she said.
