The South African Army said it would activate 10 000 troops for Operation Chariot, to mobilise in flood-ravaged KwaZulu Natal.

SANDF spokesperson, Brigadier General Andries Mokoena Mahapa, said the deploying troops would include regulars and reserves.

He said the SA Army will render support as part of Operation Chariot in erecting field accommodation, provisioning freshwater with its water purification systems, and the deployment of electricians for restoring power.

Plumbers will also be provided to help restore the water supplies in the areas that have been affected by the floods.

Mahapa said the SA Army would also provide air support while the SA Health Military Services will also be augmenting provincial health services.

He said the Army is being deployed in support of the KZN provincial relief structures under the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance.
