The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says it made great strides during July in protecting South Africans against the spread of COVID-19.
It says it confiscated illegal cigarette with the approximate value of just over R10 million; Alcohol worth R180 000 and various other contraband goods valued at over R5 million.
Troops deployed along the borders of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo confiscated dagga worth just over R3.5 million as well as narcotics with a street value of R2.4 million.
SANDF members apprehended 38 people at SA's various entry points and confiscated 12 vehicles which were handed over to police.
There are currently 10 585 troops on the ground with 2 845 who are tasked to conduct border safeguarding operations between Zimbabwe, eSwatini, Mozambique and Botswana.
Lieutenant Colonel Connie Silwer says troops are also assisting the Department of Health where staff shortages have been reported.
