Another grisly head-on collision claims two lives

Two people have lost their lives while one sustained severe injuries after two vehicles collided head-on on the R72 road in Port Alfred, about 18 km towards East London.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the grisly crash occurred on Saturday afternoon at about 16:30.

He said a Polo Vivo with one female occupant driving from Port Alfred towards East London collided with a Toyota Corolla with two occupants - a male driver and a female passenger -- heading towards Port Alfred from East London.

Both occupants from the Toyota Corolla died on the scene.

The female occupant occupant from the VW Polo Vivo sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Port Alfred Hospital for further medical treatment.

Binqose said a case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation.

"It's not yet clear if the two people who died in the accident are related or not," said Binqose.

"But what is clear is that reckless and negligent driving often result in head-on collisions and it continues to be a source of grief for a lot of families who lose their loved ones on our roads.

It is for that reason that the MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape Mr Xolile Nqatha is calling on drivers to be extra vigilant, be patient and help us avoid avoidable accidents like head-on collisions."

On Saturday, the Provincial Transport Department also reported that four people were killed in two separate accidents.
