The Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has sent another message of condolence following the passing of an eight-year-old Grade 2 learner from a Soweto primary school.

Chiloane said he was "deeply saddened" by the death of the child who fell ill after reportedly consuming biscuits bought from a local spaza shop in Diepkloof.

He said the child fell ill on Wednesday and died on Friday at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on Friday, after her condition worsened.

"At this stage, the exact cause of her passing remains unclear. The relevant authorities are conducting investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident," he said.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has dispatched its Psycho-Social Support Unit to provide counseling to the affected family, learners, and staff at Thabisile Primary School on Monday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and school community during this difficult time. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all learners and will continue to monitor developments closely,” said MEC Chiloane.
