ANCWL condemns violence against women by Uber drivers

JOHANNESBURG, September 24 (ANA) – The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) on Saturday condemned the barbaric violence by some Uber taxi drivers against women passengers and said it intended to look into the legality of Uber operations.

“We have noted cases of women who have been assaulted by Uber drivers. Several cases against Uber drivers entail kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault, [and] have been reported to the South African Police Service,” ANCWL secretary general Meokgo Matuba said.

She urged all South Africans to work together in dealing with violent actions by Uber drivers. Violence knew no gender or social status and affected everyone. All efforts were required in addressing violent acts against women in particular.

“We call on all women to be vigilant when choosing to utilise this service. The ANCWL will engage the minister of transport to look seriously into Uber and its legality to operate in the country. The ANCWL will monitor the police investigation and the legal process against all alleged cases against Uber drivers,” Matuba said.
