ANC to take message of unity to May Day rallies

ANC president Jacob Zuma will be at Cosatu's May Day rally in Mangaung on Monday.

The ruling party said Friday that senior party officials will fan out across the country to attend Workers Day rallies in several parts of the country.

Zuma is pencilled in to attend the event at Loch Logan Park in Bloemfontein, despite several Cosatu unions saying he should not attend.

Cosatu has called on Zuma to step aside following the latest cabinet reshuffle but the trade union federation remains an integral part of the tripartite alliance.

Two trade unions, Nehawu and the Communication Workers Union have already made public statements calling on the President not to attend the May Day rally.

ANC spokesperson, Khusela Sangoni, says ANC NEC members will be taking a message of unity to these gatherings.

"The ANC is in alliance with Cosatu and we speak of the issue of unity.  We speak of unity of alliance components but of the Alliance itself," she said.

"Any issues that happen in Cosatu we will obviously be concerned about, but we do believe that we'll spare no effort working together with Cosatu to ensure there is cohesion.  It is not an issue for the deployment of the African National Congress," she added.

Sangoni said this May Day and beyond, "the Revolutionary Alliance must and will continue to spare no effort to address the challenges faced within the Alliance and its component parts.

"Our shared and deep rooted commitment to transform our country remains the glue that unites us, much stronger than those issues which divides us," she said.

"We are confident therefore that the Mass Democratic Movement as a whole will use this May Day, with dignity and respect, to reflect on the struggles and victories of the working people 23 years into our democratic dispensation," Sangoni added.
