ANC lead grows as election results stream in

The African National Congress has described its lead in the elections as a good start and hoped for improvement.

Secretary general Gwede Mantashe said at the national results centre in Pretoria a short while ago that the party was confident of achieving its goal of a majority vote.

With more than 6-million votes counted already, the ANC has garnered just over 62% of the National vote followed by the DA with 23.8%.

The ANC is alsong looking strong in the Eastern Cape with 74% of the vote with the DA a distant second with 13%
The DA, however, is set to replace Cope as the official opposition in the Eastern Cape.

Mantashe expressed concern about the Western Cape, where the Democratic Alliance is leading with 60.4% of the vote to the ANC's 31.6% per cent.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the only dampener on proceedings was the shooting death of an ANC official at a polling station in KZN on Wednesday.
