The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed that former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede has withdrawn her resignation.
Gumede’s withdrawal of her resignation -- which she had handed in on Monday -- led to the cancellation of a full council sitting at which the province’s member of the executive council for safety and security Mxolisi Kaunda was supposed to be sworn in as the new political leader of the province’s only metro, which manages a budget of over R50 billion.
The party’s provincial leadership placed Gumede on leave after she was charged with allegedly being part of a tender fraud scam related to a R208 million contract within the city’s waste disposal unit.
She is currently out on R50 000 bail and will appear in court again next year.
Earlier this month, the provincial leadership announced that Gumede and her ANC executive committee members would be “redeployed”, along with the leadership of Msunduzi municipality.
Mzomuhle Dube, who speaks on behalf of Gumede's supporters, says one of the reasons for her about-turn is that the process has been poorly handled and that she is yet to present her side of the story to the ANC - ANA
