ANC expresses solidarity with cyclone victims

The ANC has expressed solidarity with the victims of the devastating tropical cyclone which hit Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, and called for the Paris agreement on the emission of greenhouse gasses to be legally enforced.

The party's secretary-general Ace Magashule says the terrible magnitude of the disaster that the sheer brutal force of Cyclone Idai caused, and the devastation that it left in its wake, caused the United Nations to declare that it is the worst natural disaster to have ever hit the Southern Hemisphere.

Magashule said thousands of people had lost their lives, and the destruction of homes and overall infrastructure and crops was devastating and would continue to negatively impact on the lives of millions of people for a long time.

Preliminary estimations indicate that more than 1000 people died in Mozambique alone, and that hundreds more died in neighbouring Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Magashule pointed out that the intensification and magnitude of natural disasters were directly related to the scientifically proven climate change, and specifically global warming.
