ANC dominates country wide by-elections

The ANC has won eight of the 13 by-elections that took place in eight of the nine provinces this week.

The Independent Electoral Commission says of the remaining seats, three went to the Democratic Alliance and two to the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Voter turnout averaged 49.49%.

The ANC won all three wards in the Eastern Cape, with two being uncontested.

The ruling party says the by-election outcome is confirmation that South Africans still view and embrace the ANC as the organisation that is committed to improving their quality of life.
