The ANC says it is concerned that pressure from a foreign donor may have led to the proposed merger between the Democratic Alliance and Agang SA.
DA leader Helen Zille and Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele had admitted that donors were seeking a strong opposition to the ANC.
ANC national spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, says it seemed as if the parties had bowed to the pressure of donors in order to get financial backing.
He says it would concerning if South Africans could not trust that the leadership, views and any other proposals of the DA and Agang were of their own making.
The brief marriage ended in acrimony this week when Zille accused Ramphele of reneging on the agreement for her to stand as the party's presidential candidate.
