An emotional Nicholas Ninow takes the stand

Convicted Dros-rapist Nicholas Ninow is giving emotional testimony in mitigation of sentence in the North Gauteng High Court.

The 20-year-old earlier pleaded guilty to raping a 7-year-old girl in the women's bathroom of a Dros restaurant in Pretoria in September last year.

He was also convicted of the possession of drugs, assault with intent to do bodily harm and intimidation.

A tearful Ninow told the court on Wednesday morning that a sober Nicholas Ninow was a completely different person to the Nicholas Ninow on drugs and alcohol.

He said that at the time of the attack on the little girl, he was in a very dark and angry place.

He acknowledged that he knew what he was doing was wrong, but that he had been in a drug-induced haze for days and had absolutely no regard for the consequences of his actions.

Ninow said remorse and regret had only set in later and that it was something he would have to live with for the rest of his life.

He issued a heartfelt apology to his grandmother, his son born while he was in prison, the mother of his son and his seven-year-old victim to whom he recited a poem that he had memorized off by heart.
