Amnesty International South Africa has welcomed the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill that was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday.
Ramaphosa also signed into law the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The Executive Director of Amnesty South Africa, Shenilla Mohamed, says the new law is a positive step towards ensuring the effective rollout of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-based Violence and Femicide which was adopted in 2020.
"Now that the Bill has become an act, we are urging the government to ensure that it is timeously, transparently, and effectively implemented", she said.
Mohamed says it must also ensure adequate resources for the implementation of a national strategic plan.
She says without this, the law, the National Council and the strategic plan will have no real impact.
