The president of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, Joseph Mathunjwa says workers in the gold mining sector have voted to strike.
He says their members rejected an 8% wage increase offer by employers on Sunday.
Amcu is demanding R12 500 for entry level workers, which mining companies have already indicated they cannot afford.
Mathunjwa says the union will continue to engage with the Chamber of Mines.
"A strike is possible but it is not definite, our priority is to negotiate. The offer of 8% over two years is an insult" he said.
