Alleged rhino poaching kingpin behind bars

Environmental Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, has welcomed the arrest of a suspect rhino poaching kingpin.

The Department of Environmental Affairs says the suspect was arrested by the Hawks on Friday while appearing in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on another rhino poaching related case.

Minister Molewa says other alleged members of the syndicate were arrested in Limpopo, North West, Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal.

The group is alleged to have contributed to the brutal slaughter and mutilation of 24 rhinos in state and privately owned game reserves between 2008 and 2012.

Minister Molewa says the 10 will appear in the Hatfield Court in Pretoria on Monday on several rhino poaching-related charges like theft, fraud, malicious injury to property and attempting to defeat the ends of justice among other charges.
